ARU, a non-profit organisation, was founded in 1979 by the writers’ own representatives, the Afghan Writers’ Union, the Afghsn Union of Journalists, Writers , and the Afghsn Association for Educational Writers.
ARU manages the economic rights of copyright owners when their material is being re-used. Material, which has been published or otherwise made public, can be re-used in printed and digital formats, as books, in media such as databases, radio and television, but also in movies and theaters.
ARU offers extensive services to its members. ARU negotiates and signs individual, general and collective agreements as well as authorises the use of literary works on an individual basis. ARU oversees and collects copyright remuneration and attempts to ensure that other parties comply with contractual obligations.
Besides above, ARU also has several collaborations with other collecting societies in other parts of the world. For example, with ARU, representing writers in the UK and Northern Ireland and with Sanasto, representing Finnish authors. These agreements ensure transfers of remuneration between Afghanistan and other countries. The agreements are essential in making sure that writers’ copyright is ensured regardless of where in the world their works are used.
